Estimating Patch Occupancy When Patches Are Incompletely Surveyed

چکیده
Institute of Statistics Mimeo Series #2543 In this paper we describe a method for statistical modeling of the probability of patch occupancy by a species as a function of patch size and other covariates when patches may be incompletely surveyed. The model is appropriate for study designs is which each patch: is visited once; is surveyed at a set of access sites from which an observer can detect the species within a measurable portion of the patch; and is surveyed until the species is detected or until all access sites have been visited. The model explicitly accounts for incomplete patch coverage, providing unbiased estimates of patch occupancy relative to the “naive” modeling approach that ignores incomplete patch coverage. The statistical model is motivated by and illustrated with data from a study of Barred owl habitat.

Temporal patch occupancy dynamics of the Siberian flying squirrel in a boreal forest landscape
Ability to predict species distribution in a landscape is of crucial importance for natural resource management and species conservation. Therefore, the understanding of species habitat requirements and spatio-temporal dynamics in occurrence is needed. We examined patch occupancy patterns of the Siberian flying squirrel Pteromys volans in northern Finland across a seven year study period. Fores...
متن کاملA comparison of patch connectivity measures using data on invertebrates in hollow oaks
This study aimed at comparing six patch connectivity measures by fitting them to field data. We used occupancy data for eight beetle and two pseudoscorpion species from 281 hollow oaks in southeast Sweden. Species occupancy was modelled in relation to tree characteristics and one measure of patch connectivity at a time. For each connectivity measure we searched for the spatial scale that genera...
متن کاملThe impact of the allee effect in dispersal and patch-occupancy age on the dynamics of metapopulations.
In this paper, we introduce a Levins-type metapopulation model with empty and occupied patches, and dispersing population. We structure the proportion of occupied patches according to the patch-occupancy age. We observe that patch-occupancy age may destabilize the metapopulation, leading to persistent oscillations. We also allow for the dispersal rate to vary with the proportion of empty patche...
متن کاملHost plant density and patch isolation drive occupancy and abundance at a butterfly's northern range margin
Marginal populations are usually small, fragmented, and vulnerable to extinction, which makes them particularly interesting from a conservation point of view. They are also the starting point of range shifts that result from climate change, through a process involving colonization of newly suitable sites at the cool margin of species distributions. Hence, understanding the processes that drive ...

AIM: Our objective was to identify the distribution of the endangered golden-cheeked warbler (Setophaga chrysoparia) in fragmented oak-juniper woodlands by applying a geoadditive semiparametric occupancy model to better assist decision-makers in identifying suitable habitat across the species breeding range on which conservation or mitigation activities can be focused and thus prioritize manage...
